Food Facts: Disturbing truths about what you eat

I thought I would change it up a little bit. So instead of the usual recent news about food, I figure i'll fill your heads with some mind blowing trivia about food.

So, here I present some factoids about food that will probably make you think about taking that next bite:



- Bottled drinking water is marketed as being cleaner than tap water, but a third of bottled water brand show higher levels of dangerous chemicals or bacteria contamination
- Almost 99% of all imported food are never inspected by the FDA or USDA
- Even if picked by hand, insects can wind up in the basket of harvested grapes, which can then wind up in the bottle of your favorite wine.
- Ever wonder why corn is used in cattle feed? Corn can fatten you up the same way it can fatten up cattle if consumed in excess.
- While some products may claim to have no MSG, they may be using alternative names for it like autolyzed or hydrolyzed vegetable protein, soy extracts, or protein isolate.
- Potatoes contain toxic compounds called glycoalkaloids which cannot be reduced through cooking, and can cause death in excessive intake. (makes me wonder if anyone has really ever died this way)
- Chocolate contains a very small amount of toxic chemicals, which humans can tolerate but is enough to kill small animals. Hence why you should never feed chocolate to your cat or dog. (Or go on a chocolate binge)
- Arsenic is an FDA approved additive to poultry feed and is given to at least 70% of all chickens raised for consumption in the US.
-"Natural" has no nutritional meaning, therefore any food deemed "natural" can have anything done to it (including dunked in the toilet).

As an Asian, I'm actually kind of glad that not everything is screened when they're imported. Though it's risky, I rather not have the blandness of the FDA or USDA telling me so and so isn't good for our health. As such, I rather avoid them doing any kind of screening because they're affiliated with the U.S. -- a country known for throwing out perfectly fine food due to commercial gimmicks such as "expiration dates" and altering food just to look appealing -- things that the FDA has no problem with.

In short, America is food-boring. We need to touch what's risque to actually start enjoying the variety of food the world has to offer.
